Frequently Asked Questions

What is boarding?

Boarding is a comfortable way for your dogs to be away from home, but still enjoy that “at home” atmosphere. Dogs enjoy structured socialization with other dogs, regular human companionship and luxury care. Learn more about our dog boarding services here.

Are kennels used for all dogs?

Kennels are often used to separate dogs during feeding, to ensure everyone is comfortable while they eat and not experiencing unnecessary pressure from other dogs. We also use kennels while cleaning or if we need dogs contained for a particular reason. If your dog is showing signs of anxiousness due to being in a new environment, we will sometimes use a kennel to give them a space that is just for them. Here, they are able to relax and take in their new surroundings easier. We pride ourselves in providing the best care for each individual pets and customizing theirs style of stay to what they need to be most comfortable.

Do you care for special needs/senior citizen dogs?

Absolutely! Before confirming the booking, we will connect with you to discuss your dogs needs. We will customize their stay to fit those needs and ensure they are comfortable. If we do not feel that our boarding setting is the best fit, we will discuss that with you, prior to booking. Your dog having a wonderful experience is our top priority.

Do you contact us while our dog is in your care?

Everyday! We will provided detail updates, adorable pictures and videos to show you how their stay is going. We also ensure that you are kept in the loop with any issues or concerns that may arise while they are in our care.

Where do the dogs sleep?

We have a space dedicated to sleeping and structured breaks. All dogs are provided with things to make sleeping/resting as comfortable as possible. Kennels, cots, fluffy dog beds, blankets etc are provided.

How many dogs do you board at a time?

Boarding numbers vary. We thoughtfully choose the boarding group to ensure it is an ideal situation for each guest. Temperament, age, specific needs, size, personally etc are all considered during the booking process.

Do you watch puppies?

We do! Our structured setting is a great way for puppies to learn proper socialization and be exposed to new things in a safe environment. Puppies typically utilize kennels to help with potty training, promote much needed rest and keep them safe.

What happens if my dog needs medical attention while in KPN’s care?

In the rare situation that your dog/animal requires medical attention that can not be addressed locally, we will take your pet to the necessary provider out of our service area. You will be contacted and informed every step of the way.

What age can a dog start using an e-collar?

At KPN we start e-collar training with dogs as young as 6 months old. If you have a puppy younger than 6 months and know e-collar training is the route you’ll be taking, you can beginning e-collar introduction at 4 months, in order to give them a head start to their training.

We believe that 6 months is a great age because the puppy is able to understand and retain the training they receive. We have worked with dogs in their senior years as well. There is no age limit!

Is the e-collar water proof?

Yes! We love the water proof feature of the training collars and remotes we work with. The remote is designed to float, so you are less likely to lose it. The collar still functions the same for your dog, in or out of the water.

We are frequently using the collars in the pool or at the beach. We recommend ensuring the charging ports are securely closed during water use and giving the remote and responder a good rinse after each use in the water. Open the charging ports and allowing everything to fully dry, is key to keeping the ecollars working their best.

Will stimulation hurt my dog?

We always encourage clients to put the responder on their palm and find their own working number, just like we find your dogs working number. This will allow you to feel exactly what your dog is feeling.

When used correctly, an e-collar is a great way to clearly communicate with your dog. I love to share this example, think of it like when you have a kid glued to a tablet or the TV. You ask them something and get no response. You try again, nothing. Then when you physically tap their shoulder they engage with you. It’s the same thing with an e-collar, but the physical touch is done through the remote and collar. The stim of the e-collar feeling is similar to a TENS machine that you use at a chiropractor or acupuncture office. Pressure only intensifies if done through the remote. The e-collar remote gives you clear visual of what level your dog is on. A number is displayed on the screen.
Higher distraction, will typically call for a higher stim level. The style of training we do at KPN allows us to customize the levels we use to fit your dog’s needs. The e-collar is used for communication NOT punishment.

This is from the company of the e-collars we use:
“Proper use of an e-collar is crucial, as low-level stimulation can have a calming effect on the dog. It is advisable to avoid high levels except in emergencies. The stimulation is comparable to a medical device known as a Muscle Stimulator or TENs Unit, which doctors use to re-educate muscles, alleviate muscle spasms, improve range of motion, prevent muscle atrophy, and address conditions stemming from a stroke. This method does not cause any marks or lingering pain and encourages compliance through muscle control of the dog’s neck. When testing on our hands it can feel very sporadic as we have many smaller muscles in our hands and fingers; to get the best result we recommend testing on the forearm on a larger muscle. When testing over and over your body does begin to “expect” the feeling and this can sometimes feel stronger or weaker depending on the person. We like to suggest placing it on your arm and testing in C mode around a level 15. This is where most people begin to feel the stimulation. Keeping in mind that dogs can typically feel the stimulation at much lower levels and the neck is a more “sensitive” area.”

Where can I buy an e-collar?

We love this brand because the pressure varies between zero and 100. There was a lot of space for us to communicate with your dog appropriately and meaningfully. Check it out here.
